FAQ

What is KindShare?

KindShare is an app-based volunteer service to support persons with disabilities and seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador. It was developed by the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities NL(COD NL) to help support our communities and it aims to be easy to use, accessible, and free of charge for all users!

In KindShare, users post a task they need support with, including; Snow-clearing, a Free Ride, Yard Work, Dog-walking, Home Maintenance/Repair, a Social Visit, or a Food/Clothing/Furniture/Appliance Donation, for example. (We create the list of activities to choose from based on feedback from participants!)

If a volunteer sees an activity that matches their schedule and location, they can accept the task and complete the job. The goal is to make it easy for everyone!

Who can join?

There are two categories of users in KindShare:  Volunteers and Beneficiaries.

 Volunteers

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to become a volunteer. Simply click the ‘Join’ button on the kindshare.ca website and select ‘Volunteer’ in order to get started!

There are two types of volunteers in the program:

1. General Volunteers - people that can respond to tasks for any beneficiary but are limited to outdoor activities.

and

2. Family and Friends Volunteers - trusted people, known to the beneficiary, who are invited by the beneficiary to support them in the program. They have permission to enter the beneficiary’s home to complete tasks. Friends and Family volunteers can also support any other beneficiaries but are limited to outdoor activities.

 Beneficiaries

Any person with a disability (over the age of 18), and any senior citizens facing barriers, can join the program. Simply click the ‘Join’ button on the kindshare.ca website and select ‘Beneficiary’ to get started!

How do I join

Volunteers

Go to  https://kindshare.ca, click the ‘Join’ button, and fill out the form with some basic information.

Watch a couple of short training videos. (Videos are accessible and feature American Sign Language, closed captioning and narration.)

Schedule a 10 minute Zoom interview with friendly KindShare staff by selecting a time of your convenience.

Then volunteers get access to a free criminal records check that is online and simple to complete. The turnaround time is typically 1 to 3 days.

Now you’re ready to go!

Beneficiaries

The Beneficiary sign up process is a bit simpler than the Volunteer process.

Go to  https://kindshare.ca, click the ‘Join’ button, and fill out the form with some basic information.

Watch a couple of short training videos. (Videos are accessible and feature American Sign Language, closed captioning and narration.)

Schedule a 10 minute Zoom interview with friendly KindShare staff.

And that’s it, you’re ready to go!

(Beneficiaries do not have to complete a criminal records check unless they also want to volunteer. Yes, you can do both within the program!)

Are there any costs associated with joining the program?

Not for you! We cover any fees associated with signing up for the program.

(For example, the criminal records check from Sterling Backcheck costs $28 and the Drivers Abstract, for the optional Free Ride program, costs $15 but we cover the cost of both!)
